HIV/AIDS

HIV is a long term chronic viral infection. To date, there is no cure. Simply put, HIV infects T-cells. T-cells are a major component of the immune system. The virus takes over the machinery of the T-cell to reproduce more HIV virus. The T-cell is then destroyed while billions of HIV viruses escape to infect other T-cells. This results in an increase of HIV virus and a decrease in T-cells.

HIV can be treated. The conventional treatment of HIV is with Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART). Master Your Illness is going to focus on nutricutical interventions to assist conventional HIV treatment.

Chronic HIV infection, with and without treatment, results in decreased absorption of Vitamin A and C. Vitamin A and C work as anti-oxidants and improve the function of HAART. Vitamin A and C also works as an antiviral agents against HIV and decreases stress on the immune system.

Two major components of HAART are the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and protease inhibitors. Vitamin A improves the function of both these classes of HIV treatment. Quercetin is a nutricutical that can reverse glutathione loss.

Lipoatrophy, a loss of localized fat, which can lead to disfigurement. HIV and the medications to treat HIV are known to cause lipoatrophy. DHEA is a hormone that is depleted by HIV. This depletion results in a hightened cortisol/DHEA ratio reported to increase lipoatrophy and disfigurement. This abnormal ratio is easily remedied with DHEA supplementation.

DHEA decreases are also associated with a decrease in T-cells and an increase in HIV viral loads.
