Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Definition:
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is an illness characterized by
debilitating fatigue lasting at least six months and
results in reduction of occupational, personal, social
or educational activities. The fatigue is not improved by rest,and
may be worsened by physical or mental activities. Symptoms may
include memory and concentration problems, unrefreshing
sleep, muscle and joint pain, headaches, tender lymph nodes, and
recurrent sore throats.
CFS can resemble many other disorders,including
mononucleosis, Lyme disease, lupus, multiple sclerosis,
primary sleep disorders like narcolepsy or sleep apnea,
hypothyroidism, severe obesity and major depressive
disorders.
4 of 8 Clinical Criteria lasting for more than 6 months for CFS diagnosis:
- Postexertional malaise lasting more than 24 hours
- Unrefreshing sleep
- Impaired memory or concentration
- Muscle pain
- Joint pain without redness or swelling
- Headache (new type or severity)
- Sore throat (frequent and recurrent)
- Tender lymph nodes
